Vikings, Saints players team up for “Best Christmas Ever” fundraiser

NEW ORLEANS, LA — The spirit of giving is carrying over from last year’s fundraising efforts following the “Minneapolis Miracle”.

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Marcus Sherels and New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead are teaming up to raise funds to support “Best Christmas Ever” families in Minnesota and the Greater New Orleans area.

Best Christmas Ever is a non-profit organization that works with community partners to help families who have fallen on hard times by giving them a Best Christmas Ever.

Following this weekend’s match-up, the winning team’s market will receive 60 percent of all donations, while 40 percent will go to the remaining area.

The players are asking fans to support Best Christmas Ever by making a donation.

Morstead said that last year, everyone was inspired by the giving nature of Vikings and Saints fans following the playoff loss, and after learning about Best Christmas Ever, the team wanted to bring the initiative to New Orleans.

Following last season’s game-winning touchdown with no time left on the clock in the Divisional match-up between the Vikings and Saints, Morstead was the first Saints player to come back out on the field to defend the NFL-mandated conversion.

Morstead suffered torn cartilage on the right side of his ribs during the game in a collision with Sherels, but continued playing.

A Vikings fan made a post on Reddit asking fans to recognize Morstead’s sportsmanship by donating to What You Give Will Grow, and after $3,100 had been raised by more than 250 fans two mornings after the game, Morstead said all donations received by the foundation during the week would be donated to the Children’s Minnesota Child Life Program as a “thank you” from support of Vikings fans following the game.

More than $220,000 was donated throughout the week from more than 5,400 donors.
