Eye On Mining: SME conference underway in Duluth

DULUTH, MN — An estimated 1,000 people have converged on Duluth to talk all things mining.

The 92nd annual SME Conference kicked off this week at the DECC.

It’s a place for mining professionals to gather, network, and share ideas.

Those who attend participate in technical sessions, short courses, a tradeshow, and hear from a number of speakers.

Some of the highlights from this year’s conference include a short course focused on 40 years of DNR research regarding mining and the environment and a talk on global trends in mining and metals.

Julie Marinucci, Chair of the MN Section of SME, said the conference provides an experience that is beneficial to those involved in the mining industry.

“The regional nature of our conference is really important because Northeastern Minnesota is a mining center, a very important mining center with our long history of iron mining and our emerging and growing nonferrous sector. So to provide this level of a conference to our region is really great.”

Around 1,000 people are expected to attend, along with over 175 vendors.

The conference wraps up Wednesday.
