Lakeside Duluth Firefighter reunites with mother and son

DULUTH, MN — A special reunion on Monday at a Duluth Fire Station.

Around 1 a.m. on November 22nd, 2016, fire captain Mark Herman responded to a Duluth woman who was giving birth near the Lester Park neighborhood.

The baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.

Herman held the cord away from the baby’s neck during the ride to St. Luke’s Hospital, allowing it to breathe.

On Monday,  Herman finally reunited with the boy he saved.

Mark Herman states, “My mission of the game was to take pressure off the cord on the scene and on the way to the hospital and with everything with our health care in place. We have a beautiful outcome. It is great to see him healthy and actually liking fire trucks too.”‘

Forty percent of the calls firefighters respond to are first responder calls, helping people in need, rather than fighting actual fires.
