Planning Commission votes on apartment complex

DULUTH,MN–Tonight the Duluth Planning Commission voted unanimously on updates to a proposed apartment complex in Lincoln Park.

A Twin Cities area developer hopes to construct the building on West Superior Street, where the former Roberts Furniture store currently sits.

It would be a four-story, 75 unit complex made up of one and two-bedroom apartments.

The developer says it can’t build a parking garage below ground, so it would have to be built above ground.

It’s a move approved unanimously by the planning commission,  despite concerns plans don’t call for additional businesses as part of the proposal.

One Lincoln Park resident says there is definitely a need for more housing and more businesses.

Suzi Gadbaw says, “I think it’s good for the West End community, I’d rather see a grocery store here myself. I think as long as it’s affordable for everyone, not just the elite.”

Outside groups have five days to appeal the commission’s decision.

If they do the vote would go to the City Council.

The developer didn’t return our calls asking about a price point.
