Yellowjackets hit reset button after successful 2018 campaign

SUPERIOR, WI- The UW-Superior men’s soccer team is coming off a terrific season in 2018. A 20 game winning streak on top of a UMAC title, plus the Yellowjackets won their 1st round match in the NCAA tournament.

Today, they began their 2019 campaign with their 1st team practice.

UWS has a number of key returning players including Eric Watson and James Bruce who both made up for 67 percent of the Yellowjackets goals in 2018.

The backline for Superior also will be strong as they have 3 of 4 starters from last year back this season.

The Yellowjackets are proud of what they were able to accomplish in 2018, but they say they’re leaving their accomplishments in the past.

“A UMAC tournament for us doesn’t exist, we have to get there first. We have 12 non-conference games along with our conference games that we have to get through first. Then create those opportunities for us to play in a postseason and hopefully in an NCAA tournament again,” said head coach Joe Mooney.

“There’s things to take from last season, without a doubt. I mean anytime you have a record-setting year, there’s going to be things that you want to keep. We’re looking to find a new way to make the same kind of achievements this year,” added senior striker Eric Watson.

“We’re obviously just coming off of summer. We need to get in the right mindset and just strive to be better than we were last year. At least,” said senior forward James Bruce.

The Yellowjackets first regular-season game will be in Sherman, Texas against Austin on August 30th.
