SLC decreasing Amazon usage in favor of buying local

DULUTH, MN — After learning the county spent almost $150,000 on Amazon last year, St. Louis County commissioners Tuesday, passed a resolution to buy local.

The board unanimously passed the measure, strengthening its purchasing language.

The Amazon spending was a very small portion of the county’s $270-million dollar budget last year, but commissioners say that’s not the point.

They want county employees to make every effort to buy local first, using tax dollars to support the economy.

Previously, the rules only asked employees to attempt partnering with local stores.

“This is not just about purchasing locally. It was never just about purchasing locally. It was about accountability as well,” said Commissioner Keith Nelson.

Commissioners say they’re working with the county auditor’s office and purchasing department to better track spending, making the system more accountable.
