Veteran led Bulldogs open 2019 season with 1st official practice

DULUTH, MN- It will be a much older UMD squad this year as the women’s hockey team began their 2019 season with their 1st practice.

The Bulldogs have only 3 freshmen on the roster this upcoming year.

They return a number of key players including goalie Maddie Rooney, forward Sydney Brodt, and defenseman Jalyn Elmes.

The team says with a number of veteran players on the team, they’re expecting more out of each other.

“They all want to go out with a bang and I’m really excited about that group. So with them leading, I think the consistency issue will hopefully go away and we’ll just have it. We have really motivated rising sophomores in Gabbie and Anneke, Lizzie, Maggie, and Skinner. All of those guys played huge minutes for us last year. So I think we’re in a good spot,” said head coach Maura Crowell.

UMD opens the season Saturday in an exhibition game versus the Minnesota Whitecaps.

One other note: Maura Crowell confirmed that forward Naomi Rogge will miss the season with a knee injury.
