SUPERIOR, WI — The Superior Fire Department will soon be under new leadership.
Current Battalion Chief Scott Gordon has been named as the department’s next fire chief, and will officially be promoted on October 1st.
“We have a brand-new fire station, we have a new fire chief, and soon-to-be two new battalion chiefs. That’s a lot of new.” Gordon says. “We’re going to spend the next couple years, which will be by tenure, making sure that new is to continue long after I’m gone.”
Gordon, who has been with the department for nearly three decades, says he plans to continue on the path that has been paved before him.
“I’m certainly going to continue with what we’ve done,” Gordon says. “Under Chief Panger, we’ve changed a lot about the way this department operates, the things we’re involved in, and the successes that we’ve had.”
Gordon will be replacing current Chief Steve Panger, who will be retiring at the end of the month.
“We have a very young department,” Gordon says. “As a matter of fact I have three more firefighters starting next week, just started three a couple months ago, and will hopefully hire four more here at the end of the year, so we’re a young department.”
Gordon admits the promotion will take some getting used to.
“I have to get used to coming off of shift, which means I’m not going on calls anymore, but I’m also working on training the person who’s going to take my spot,” Gordon says.
It’s a change he says he’s ready for, as Panger gets ready to pass the baton.
“I just know that it’s going to be a real easy transition for him to fire chief, and I’m really excited for him and I’m excited for the department,” Panger says.
Gordon says he plans to retire in three years.
