DULUTH, MN-- This weekend is the Duluth Cross Country Ski Club's CXC Cup opener.

The tournament is at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center at the base of Spirit Mountain.

The Midwest's best junior and collegiate Nordic skiers are competing in Duluth's newest cross country ski area, racing for the Central Cross Country Ski Association's Junior and Youth Cup.

Gary Larson, the chief of the competition, says this is a great opportunity for young skiers in Twin Ports.

"This is kind of our dream we've had for years, to get to this point where we can have these races. We hope that some of these young kids that are skiing here now are someday going to bring home Olympic medals," Larson said.

The competition continues Sunday with fast-paced sprint races.

Clubs from both the Midwest and Great Lake Divisions are racing on the newly built trail system at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center.
