Cloquet votes to raise tobacco purchase age to 21

CLOQUET, MN-- Cloquet City Councilors voted unanimously Tuesday to raise the legal tobacco purchasing age from 18 to 21.

According to City Administrator Tim Peterson, the purpose of the change was to update the city ordinance's language to comply with Federal law.

Back in December, the Carlton County Board of Commissioners also voted unanimously to raise the purchasing age to 21.

Peterson said the city of Cloquet is responsible for licensing tobacco dealers within city limits, meaning Carlton County's ordinance didn't apply to Cloquet.

The ordinance went into effect on Wednesday.

The City Council's next meeting is on February 18.
