Simonson faces GOP challenger for Duluth Senate seat

DULUTH, MN -- Duluthian Donna Bergrstrom is challenging Duluth senator Erik Simonson for his senate seat.

The Republican recently retired from the Marines Corps.

In a news release, she said there are a number of issues facing Duluth she wants to address.

“I was shocked at the lack of business opportunities in Duluth, the strangling taxes at the local, county and state levels, and the evolution of the State government toward an increased role in our daily lives,” she noted.

Bergstrom added she has "observed out-of-control drug and alcohol problems to go with the deteriorating climate for the kinds of businesses communities should be trying to attract. Additionally, Minnesota continues to have the highest out-of-home placement rate in the nation for our American Indian children, we have public schools that are failing our students, and the state has personal and corporate taxes that are some of the highest in the nation. “We have to move those statistics in a different direction."

Bergstrom will hold a Campaign Kick-off on Feb 27th at Gannuccis.

Simonson is currently in his second 2 year term. He won the 2016 election for the same seat over Bergstrom.
