DULUTH, MN -- Starting Friday May 8, a Duluth children's book author will have her work available on screens all over the country.

"It kind of falls under the dream come true category," author Chris Monroe said.

After several years of work, a production company and Netflix are now releasing the "Chico Bon-Bon: Monkey with a Tool Belt" animated series based on Monroe's book series.

In 2008, Monroe started writing and illustrating children's books. One of her most popular books is the "Monkey with a Tool Belt."

"My son add I were brainstorming the idea together, and we really loved to watch animation and cartoons," Monroe said. "And I kind of thought a monkey with a tool belt could potentially someday be a cartoon."

Monroe credits the inspiration for Chico's story to Duluth's Marshall Hardware store where she worked for nine years.

Monroe's former boss and friend Steve Marshall proudly sells all of her books in his store.

"Some of the tools and names she's come up with are amazing," Marshall said. "All the tools that we carry, she was inspired by all that stuff."

For Monroe, she feels the beloved character Chico is growing up by taking this special next step.

"I feel like Chico Bon Bon is in a new chapter of his life. He drives a van. He's got some new friends," Monroe said.

Ten episodes of the "Chico Bon Bon: Monkey with a Tool Belt" series will be released on Netflix on Friday. They are roughly 10 minutes long.

Monroe said she was very happy with how the production company adapted the book, and she plans on watching it with her granddaughter.
