DULUTH,MN-- The Minnesota DFL announced that they are endorsing Jen McEwen for the District 7 state senate seat, currently held by first-term incumbent Erik Simonson.
The nearly 400 delegates voted Saturday during the DFL virtual convention, choosing McEwen 70% to 29%.
“Jen has a clear vision for our community, and she’s already demonstrated that she has the passion to be an effective legislator,” said Duluth City Councilor Joel Sipress.
McEwen is a plaintiffs attorney representing workers with disability claims against insurance companies, and Board President of the Damiano Center in Duluth.
Despite this endorsement, Simonson said that he still plans to run for re-election and will be on the primary ballot in August.
Simonson said he is confident that his moderate and inclusive approach to legislating will resonate with Duluth voters.
"I have worked hard to build relationships across the aisle, amongst stakeholders, and I am a believer that effective policy is more important than politics. Consensus building is the core of effective legislating, and I am hoping to gain the support of Duluthians who are worried about their future, access to good paying jobs, quality education, and affordable health care as we prepare for the coming recession," said Simonson in a statement Saturday.
The primary is going to be held on August 11th. Minnesota residents are able to apply for an absentee ballot through the DFL right now or through the Secretary of State’s office starting May 13th.
