Minnesota man convicted in 2018 child sex assault in Bayfield County

WASHBURN, WI -- A Bayfield County jury has convicted a Minnesota man of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 16.

The conviction of Mathew Lauseng was handed down Thursday following a three day jury trial.

Authorities say the then 33-year-old Lauseng sexually assaulted the child in the Washburn area in August of 2018.

He faces a $100,000 fine and up to 40 years behind bars.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 14.

The Bayfield County District Attorney said in a statement she is incredibly proud of the victim for coming forward and testifying in the case.
