Mellen camp linked to 14 cases of COVID-19

ASHLAND COUNTY, WI -- Ashland County public health officials are investigating after a Mellen leadership camp was linked to 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In a news release Friday afternoon, Elizabeth Szot, Health Officer for Ashland County, said the outbreak is associated with Camp Eagle Ridge, mostly among its staff.

Szot added that the county is working with the camp leaders and staff to contain the virus.

“Camp Eagle Ridge leadership has been working closely with the families of all campers, and all campers from the entire camp season have been notified of potential risk exposure as an additional precaution,” Szot said.

Camp staff and campers have little interaction with local communities and the camp has taken precuations to prevent any further spread, according to Szot.

She said as soon as the outbreak was identified, all campers returned home with instructions for the remainder of the isolation period and ongoing symptom monitoring.

Szot called the camp outbreak "isolated."

According to the camp's website, they work to "help young people develop leadership skills, healthy living skills, and a sense of community responsibility."
