Proceeding Safely: NCHC commissioner talks returning to college hockey

Duluth, Minn. -- The question on all our minds over the past few months since the season was cancelled back in March… is when will we have college hockey?

That answer is not yet as clear as we may want it to be. As of right now, the start date for UMD men's hockey is in October. Of course with the recent cancellations with fall sports and the NSIC… that is subject and likely to change.

The NCHC, the conference that UMD belongs to has been in communication with schools, with student-athletes on how to safely proceed with the season.

"At the end of the day it comes down to the health and safety of the student-athletes and a larger sight of things a kind of greater campus communities," said NCHC commissioner Josh Fenton. "Whatever plan we put into place, we need to make sure it's a safe and responsible one."

Fenton has even been in contact with college basketball leaders on how they can safely put into place plans to play Winter sports.

"Competition first date is November 10th on the division one level. For college hockey it's October third. So we're talking about a month and a weeks difference so that's pretty significant. But we're attempting to align with basketball and understand what they are doing. Hopefully we can put together a plan for the general public."
