CARLTON COUNTY, MN -- Authorities responded to a trench rescue emergency in Carlton County Friday afternoon.

According to Virginia Fire Department's Facebook page, an Enbridge Line 3 protester climbed into a 10-foot-deep trench along the pipeline.

The post said the person was in danger of being buried alive because of the trench's collapsing wall and fine sand floor.

Authorities tried convincing the protester to climb out of the trench but were unsuccessful at first.

Arrowhead Urban Search and Rescue prepared to use a team of technicians and equipment to safely remove the protester.

They were eventually able to persuade the protester to exit the trench.

Camp Migizi, the Line 3 resistance camp in Cloquet, posted about the incident on their Facebook page.

They said the protester placed themselves inside the trench in order to "shut down work which they effectively did for two hours."

We reached out to Carlton County Sheriff's Office for more information.
