BCA: Homicide investigation underway after man’s body found near Lake Superior, Duluth man charged

ST. PAUL, MN — Authorities have ruled a St. Paul man’s death a homicide after his body was found off the shores of Lake Superior in Cook County Friday.

Authorities identified the victim as Richard Anthony Balsimo, 34. He was last seen in St. Paul on June 20, according to authorities.

His remains were located by dive teams on July 15 and 16 off the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Portage.

According to the medical examiner, Balsimo died of homicidal violence.

According to the criminal complaint, Balsimo was likely murdered and dismembered on June 20, and his body later placed in five-gallon buckets in Lake Superior outside of Grand Portage, Cook County, Minnesota.

An adult witness who had information about Balsimo's death agreed to speak with the BCA.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Robert Thomas West was charged on July 16 with one count Aiding an Offender and one count Interference with a Dead Body for his role in the incident.

Authorities said more charges are anticipated.

It’s not clear how exactly Balsimo died or if authorities have identified other suspects connected with his murder.

Multiple agencies are helping the BCA with this ongoing investigation.

Additional details about his cause are pending further investigation.
