Carlton Co. man pleads not guilty to assaulting infant

A Carlton County man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he assaulted his 3-month old infant.

Orion Verbist, 25, entered that plea in court Friday.

He was charged with first-degree assault in December 2018. The charges were filed shortly after the infant was taken to the hospital for a skull fracture, fractured arm, and fractured rib.

Also in that courtroom Friday, the defense challenged the statement Verbist originally gave to law enforcement. A judge is expected to consider written arguments.

Verbist is due back in court next month.

He’s being held in the Carlton County jail on $500,000 bail.

Earlier this week, he was cited for fifth degree assault while he was in custody. The Carlton County Assisstant Attorney didn’t have further details.
