Superior Senior Center renamed after Lew Martin

After unanimous approval from Superior’s City Council Tuesday night, a late Twin Ports icon received a big honor today.

Superior Mayor Jim Paine signed a resolution to rename the Senior Center Building to the Lew Martin Senior Center.

Martin was involved at the center for three years.

But his legacy dates back to 1936 when he graced the Twin Ports airwaves before making the transition to television news at WDSM, now KBJR-TV.

In addition to being a broadcast icon, Martin spent 30 years on the Douglas County Board.

Superior City leaders say it’s a way to “lift up an inspiring human being.”

“He believed there should be a safe place for seniors to gather for fellowship, friendship and enrichment, education so that they could be still be active members of the community,” Superior mayor Jim Paine says. “Lew was an active member of the community. He believed every citizen and senior citizen should be as well. He was a living example of what this center is all about.”

Lew Martin died in February at the age of 102.
