ST. PAUL, MN — A discharge permit is now valid for US Steel Corp – Minntac.

The permit, which is valid from December first 2018 to November 30th of 2023, authorizes Minntac to operate a disposal system which discharges into the Dark River, Timber Creek, and unnamed wetlands north of the Tailings Basin area, as well as unnamed wetlands tributary to Timber Creek and Dark River, as long as the discharge is in accordance with the permit requirements.

According to the MPCA, the permit’s goal is to reduce pollutant levels in point source and non-point source discharges, as well as protect water quality in accordance with the U.S. Clean Water Act, Minnesota statues and rules, and federal laws and regulations.

The permit expires at midnight on November 30th, 2023.

Manager of the Mining Sector for the MPCA, Jeff Udd says, “The first part is they have to do a full assessment of their facility, both hydro, geologic, and operating changes or treatment of systems that can be employed in order to meet those standards […] As part of the permit, there are check-in steps that happen. There is also ongoing monitoring that occurs where monitoring is submitted to us for our review.”

U.S. Steel issued the following statement on Monday in regards to the issued permit:

“U. S. Steel is pleased that MPCA acted to reissue the administratively extended Minntac Tailings Basin NPDES permit. We are currently reviewing the permit and evaluating the conditions.”
