Emma, Liam remain as top baby names for 2018

WASHINGTON D.C.– The Social Security Administration has released its list of the top baby names for 2018.

Liam tops the boys list for the second time, while Emma remains at number one for girls name for the fifth straight year.

Here are few other notable changes to the list:

  • Jacob fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 1992
  • Abigail falls out of the top ten for the first time since 2000
  • Lucas makes its debut in the top ten for boys names
  • Harper regains a spot in the top ten for girls names

Each year, the list reveals pop-culture has made an impact on naming trends, and royalty seems to have influenced parents in 2018. Here are a few examples:

  • Meghan became the fastest rising girls’ name, climbing 701 spots to number 703 from number 1,404 in 2017. This jump speaks to the popularity of Meghan Markle, who joined the royal family when she married Prince Harry in 2018.
  • Archie reappears in the top 1,000 in 2018 for the first time since 1988
  • For those who are Game of Thrones fans, the name Yara rose 314 spots from number 986 in 2017 to number 672 in 2018 on the girls’ side.
  • Genesis is the fastest rising name for 2018 among boys, rising 608 spots to number 984 in 2018 from number 1,592 in 2017.
