April snow storm brings minimal damage to Lakewalk, cleanup still needed

DULUTH, MN — A sigh of relief for city crews Monday, following last week’s spring snow storm that brought with it wind gusts reaching 70 miles an hour.

The Duluth Lakewalk in Canal Park has been victim to millions of dollars in damage in storms past, but city crews say it appears the area was spared this time around.

“This storm started slower,” Construction Project Supervisor Mike LeBeau said. “The wind built up gradually, and we could watch the ice come down the lake and pile up along the shoreline.”

As the snow begins to fade and the Lakewalk is revealed, city crews say we’re in good shape.

“A lot of is still covered with ice, but as it melts back, mostly what I’ve seen is just a lot of cleanup,” LeBeau said.

LeBeau was out surveying the area Monday morning.

“I was there this morning and there was some damage, but the shorelines already so beat up there that it was not significant, and it’s protected by a very large ridge of ice,”  LeBeau said.

A sigh of relief.

“Oh, I’m relieved that we’re not seeing that much additional damage,” LeBeau said. “We have enough to fix already.”

As the city urges for patience, and looks to build ahead.

“It’s a popular place. Everyone wants to be down here, or a lot of us do, and it’s going to take a while to put everything back together.”

Crews say the retaining wall recently built behind the Fitger’s Complex did help.

Next, the city will turn to building a new boardwalk, from Fitger’s to the Veterans Memorial, which is on pace to be completed by mid-summer.
