Happy birthday! Brett Favre turns 50 today

GREEN BAY (WKOW) – One of the Green Bay Packers’ most beloved players in team history, Brett Favre, turns 50 today.

Favre became the Packers’ starting quarterback in the fourth game of the 1992 season, stepping in for injured quarterback Don Majkowski.

Favre, who now lives in Sumrall, outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was born in Gulfport, Mississippi on Oct. 10, 1969.

After receiving only one scholarship offer out of high school, Favre played four years at Southern Miss before being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft.

But over in Green Bay, General Manager Ron Wolf had his eye on the young gun-slinger and traded a first-round pick in 1992 to the Falcons for Favre. The trade would define both Favre and Wolf’s careers.

Favre’s first start as Packer came in the fourth game of the ’92 season when he took over for injured QB Don Majkowski. Favre went on to play in the next 297 games, the longest streak in NFL history.

Favre led the team to two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXI 35-21 over the Patriots, and losing to Denver, the following year, 31-24.

After leaving the Packers in 2008, Favre played one season with the Jets and two seasons with the Vikings.

Favre, along with Aaron Rodgers and Bart Starr, are the only quarterbacks to lead the Packers to Super Bowl victories.
