$4M grant stretches Duluth agency’s mental health reach

DULUTH, MN — A mental health agency in Duluth has been awarded a major grant that its leaders say could help expand their services to nearly 1,500 more Northlanders every year and curb the opioid crisis along the way.

The Human Development Center announced the $4 million grant Tuesday morning. They will see $2 million per year for two years under a SAMHSA funding opportunity for the Expansion of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC).

According to HDC officials, the grant will allow them to expand comprehensive mental health and substance use programs by about 20 percent.

Specifically, in the wake of the region’s opioid crisis, they plan to use this funding to develop the area’s first withdrawal management program and office-based Medication Assisted Therapy.

They also hope to re-vamp their intake process to create greater access to screening and patient assessment and better access to services.
