Twins, Brewers nearing assured playoff contention

DULUTH, MN — It’s the final countdown for the Minnesota Twins and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Both teams are vying for spots in the MLB playoffs – the Twins are playing to clinch the American League Central, while the Brewers are competing for a Wild Card spot in the National League.

The teams each have a “magic number”, a term used to determine how close a team is to clinching a playoff birth.

The Twins’ number is two, meaning the team needs to win two games to finalize their playoff spot. Losses by the Cleveland Indians would also work in the Twins’ favor towards their magic number count.

The Twins haven’t clinched won the AL Central pennant since 2010. It would be Minnesota’s 7th division title in franchise history.

Should they earn a spot in the playoffs as a division winner, Minnesota would be guaranteed a spot in the ALDS. That would ensure at least one playoff home game at Target Field, likely against the Houston Astros or New York Yankees.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee’s number is one, meaning that their next victory will clinch their spot in the NL Wild Card race. They haven’t advanced to back-to-back postseasons since 1981-82.

A loss by the Chicago Cubs would also clinch a playoff spot for Milwaukee. The Washington Nationals have already clinched the other National League Wild Card spot, with a one-game lead over the Brewers. Five games remain in the season, which will determine seeding and home-field advantage.

Oddly enough, the Brewers and Twins have never been to the MLB playoffs in the same season. Since they play in different leagues, it would technically be possible for the bordering rivals to meet in the World Series.

Here’s the game line-up for Wednesday night:

  • Minnesota Twins @ Detroit Tigers, 5:40 p.m.
  • Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds, 5:40 p.m.
  • Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates, 6:05 p.m.
  • Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox, 7:10 p.m.
