Essentia awarded $5.6 million cancer research grant

DULUTH, MN– Essentia Health announced Wednesday that the Duluth-based hospital system has been awarded a $5.6 million grant for cancer research.

According to Essentia spokespeople, the grant is from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

“We are extremely pleased to receive funding through NCI as an NCORP program once again,” said Dr. Bret Friday, medical director of oncology research at Essentia. “It was a competitive renewal and our funding has increased by 30 percent over the prior year.”

The grant funding is available over six years, and was recently renewed.
