St. Cloud State hockey returns solid core to build upon

Duluth, Minn. — During Thursday’s NCHC media day, we heard from all the coaches around the conference ahead of the college hockey season… one of those coaches is one well-known to the Northland in former UMD assistant coach Brett Larson.

The Duluth-native is entering his second year with the Huskies after one heck of a debut… his team clinched the Penrose Cup and beat the Bulldogs a three out of five times during the year… this year, however is going to look very different for the Huskies, losing a lot of their heavy hitters from last year.

“When you lose a lot of players like we did and a lot of high-end players, it’s really nice to have what you have in great goaltending and a really solid d-core we also love our leadership in Jack Achan and the Poehling brothers and the guys that are wearing letters. With that core there I think that gives us an opportunity to develop some skill that we really like. We may not be a team that is number one in the country and there’s a good chance that we aren’t but I think with that type of core and that skill you have an opportunity to develop a team that is playing its best hockey at the end of the year,” said Larson.

UMD won’t face St. Cloud until January 17th and 18th.
