70-year-old assaulted during Park Point home invasion dies

DULUTH, MN– Larry Watczak, the 70-year-old man who was assaulted during a home invasion on Park Point died at Essentia Health, Saturday.

Earlier this month, Watczak called 911 to report a burglary and assault at his home in the Park Point neighborhood. When responding officers arrived, Watczak was holding a towel to his head where he was injured after being hit by a blunt object.

Watczak reported a blanket was thrown over him as two males entered his home before he was assaulted and items were taken. However, investigators have found evidence indicating only one intruder in the home.

After a preliminary investigation, items recovered in a search warrant of the suspect’s residence, and review of multiple surveillance cameras, officers arrested Darrell  Mayhew last Sunday for burglary and assault of Watczak.

Mayhew was taken into custody and formally charged on Wednesday with first-degree assault, aggravated first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $750,000 and denied a referral to supervised release.

When the Duluth Police Department learned Watczak died,  they said they would continue working with the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office to consider amending the charges.

The Duluth Police Department said they would like to thank the numerous citizens who called in tips and is grateful for the assistance of area businesses and residents who shared surveillance footage to aid in the investigation of this crime. With this support, the DPD was able to make a swift arrest less than 100 hours after the original 911 call.

Police said the assault was unrelated to several burglaries that happened on Park Point.
