2018 tourism numbers exceeded expectations

DULUTH, MN– Duluth continues to be a popular place to visit in Minnesota. This as tourism’s economic impact in the city exceeded expectations in 2018.

Numbers beat projections by almost five percent.
As far as a dollar amount, officials said tourism-related revenue brought in nearly $12,200,000 when they were only expecting $11,500,000.
Officials are attributing the growth, in part, to opening a handful of new hotels last year and several Duluth restaurants being local, family owned establishments.
Officials said this growth isn’t new, adding Duluth has seen more than 20 years of uninterrupted growth.
But it wasn’t always that way.

“Tourism is one of the main foundations of our community. And I was here in Duluth in the 70s and 80s when we were struggling mightily as a community. We were a manufacturing community far too dependent on one industry, and that’s when people really started to turn toward the lake and say, ‘what can we do here?’,” said  David Ross, Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce president.

Officials said they’re confident 2019 shows promise for having high tourism numbers as well.
