40 positions cut at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Virginia office

VIRGINIA, MN – Approximately 40 positions are being eliminated from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield office in Virginia, the organization announced Thursday.

In a statement, Jim McManus, director of public relations, said the layoffs at the healthcare network come as a result of “centralizing resources and staffing levels around key strategic priorities.”

Affected employees were notified Thursday but it will be a few more weeks before the layoffs go into effect.

“As our industry continues to face new challenges and opportunities, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is on a journey to transform health care and deliver quality outcomes at the lowest cost to provide a differentiated experience for our members. Ensuring we have the right capabilities and organizational design is one of the first critical steps we are taking to better enable future innovation and growth.”

Between its offices in Virginia and Aurora, Blue Cross employs 500 positions that are a mix of claims processing and calls.

“Blue Cross remains committed to the Iron Range. Our workforce in Virginia and Aurora will continue to be a vital part of our efforts to transform health care throughout Minnesota.”

McManus said affected employees will be eligible to apply for newly-created positions later this year.

The organization employs 3,900 employees in Minnesota.
