Flooding forces Ely restaurant to temporarily close

ELY, MN–A night full of rain, on top of the frozen sewer systems, has affected at least one Ely restaurant.

“Around 8:30 last night we noticed water coming through the doorway and the walls around here,” Dan Peace, owner of Sir G’s, said.

He says it only took 15-20 minutes before the whole dining area was flooded.

“It probably took an hour before things started slowing down, it was still puddled in here when we left. There was water still in here when we left at 11 p.m. last night.”

But it didn’t take long for the community to spring into action.

“I was surprised how fast people showed up, we had a lot of people just show up to see what’s going on. We had people bring trucks of sand bags,” Peace said.

Efforts that Peace says likely prevented this bad situation from turning into a disaster.

“It’s a great town, the community steps in when they have to to help out–they didn’t have to, they just did it. It was great.”

Peace said they are waiting word on a cleanup crew, and they hope to re-open the business as soon as they can.
