SUPERIOR, WI — Superior got a visit Monday from Tony Evers for the first time as Governor.

He got to hear people’s reactions to his plans for Northwest Wisconsin.

Governor Tony Evers and Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes have been stopping at places all around Wisconsin as part of their Statewide Budget Listening Tour.

After introducing the budget in late February, Evers stresses there’s still a lot of work to be done, and more voices to be heard.

Tonight at UW – Superior they hosted a round-table like discussion, with each listening session having a different category such as Criminal Justice Reform, Education, Infrastructure, Jobs and Tax Fairness, Healthcare and the Environment.

We asked the Governor if he gathered a common theme from people who live in the Northland on these topics.

“Superior did not disappoint. There was lots of good discussion, and I really like it when we have a chance to listen to what people are saying – hearing those building blocks that they do they talk about healthcare and then they’ll morph into how that impacts education, how education impacts criminal justice reform” said Governor Evers.

Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes was able to stop in Superior a few months ago to listen to people regarding the budget, and he says that while the issues haven’t changed, the timing has.

“People were concerned about education, the roads, the environmental quality issues and the rising cost of healthcare. While those issues are the same, the position that we’re in is a little bit different because this was before we introduced the budget, now that we have introduced the budget the people who were here are understanding that it’s time to take the attention to the legislature,” said Lt. Governor Barnes

The duo was in Superior for one night only, but had an hour and a half to participate in healthy dialogue.

In part of Governor Evers proposed budget, he wants 150 million dollars to the UW System budget.
