COHASSET, MN– A 21-year old male is dead and another 21-year old is waiting for formal charges after an ATV hit a power pole early Saturday morning.
According to the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of an ATV accident along County Road 459 about seven miles south of Cohasset just after 2 a.m. Sunday.
Emergency responders on scene said that three men were riding on a single ATV when it swerved to miss a deer and struck a power pole.
Dylan Christy, 21, of Grand Rapids, suffered life-threatening injuries and was air-lifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, where he later died of his injuries.
Alexander Rajala, 21, of Grand Rapids, was taken to Grand Itasca Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the ATV, a 21-year old Cohasset man, was not injured, but was arrested for criminal vehicular operation. It was then upgraded to include criminal vehicle homicide after Christy died of his injuries.
Authorities say they believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
