A proposal that was nearly 2 years in the making.

It’ll take $180 million dollars to create a consolidated school district

The Eveleth-Gilbert & Virginia Public Schools Referendum passed on Tuesday.

“This is a major win for our students and for our community, this is by any standard going to be a world class education and it’s going to be pretty awesome to be apart of” according to Eveleth-Gilbert Superintendent Jeff Carey

The referendum approved last night calls for a new high school located in the Midway area and two new elementary schools, one in Virginia and one in the Midway area.

Local tax payers will be responsible for paying for 19% of the bill.

School leaders say the high school will prepare students for a 4 or 2 year college, technical school, or the work force.

The collaboration plans leave the small town of Gilbert without a school.

“I’m all for it i guess but you put me behind the 8 ball without a facility in here to find families to move to our town that have kids. Without kids, that’s going to be ok I guess but that’s what the problem is going to be” says Karl Oberstar Jr, Mayor of Gilbert

Even with hesitation from Mayor Oberstar, he still says he’s willing to collaborate.

“And our hope would be that as we design the school building going forward that the people who weren’t happy with it or voted against it, would come join us at the table, redesign education, work with us on improving education, figuring out what the buildings are gonna look like, that’s what our hope would be. The door is open”
Noel Schmidt Superintendent of Virginia Schools

This project is expected to take 2-3 years, and groundbreaking is set for 2020.
