5 children hospitalized for minor injuries after truck hits school bus

HARRIS TOWNSHIP, MN — Authorities say five children are recovering from minor injuries after a pickup truck hit a school bus in Itasca County just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Ford pickup driven by Shawn McDowell, 49, of Grand Rapids, was heading south on Highway 169 near Harris Township and began to turn west on County Road 17. McDowell apparently decided not to turn, and returned to the southbound lane of 169.

Authorities say that’s when the truck hit the bus, which was also heading south on Hwy. 169.

According to the State Patrol, the bus was carrying a driver, as well as two other adults, and 32 children.

The State Patrol says McDowell’s vehicle then came to a stop after hitting the bumper of a Dodge pickup truck, which was stalled on the right shoulder of northbound 169.

According to authorities, McDowell, as well as the drivers of the bus and the Dodge pickup, were not injured during the incident.

Authorities say all of the hospitalized children were taken to Grand Itasca Hospital, and families were notified by North Homes Children and Family Services.
