WisDOT: Beware of buckling pavement due to upcoming warm weather

MADISON, WI– WisDOT officials are asking those traveling during the next few days to be aware of road conditions.

With hot and humid weather conditions expected throughout the state, officials want motorists to be aware of possible pavement buckling.

Buckling pavement is more common during the initial heat waves of the season, as the conditions go from cool to hot.

This change in temperature causes the pavement to expand, which can then cause slabs of pavement to push together, and can buckle if the pressure force is great enough.

It’s extremely difficult to predict when and where the pavement will buckle, but WisDOT has provided tips on what motorists can do if it occurs:

  • Be sure to reduce your speed, eliminate distractions and make sure everyone is buckled up
  • Beware of slowing traffic, and be prepared to move over if crews are out fixing the roadways
  • If there are any serious pavement problems, call 911 and provide specific details, including the location of the problem
  • Always check the 511 website for the latest road updates, including incidents and road closures/delays
