Authorities localize violent crimes report

DULUTH, MN– The numbers are in. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension recently released the 2018 Uniform Crime Report.

The numbers show there was a decrease in violent crimes but an increase in sexual assault.

But are those numbers the same here in Duluth?

Authorities said here in Duluth, violent crimes and sexual assaults increased in 2018

When authorities look at these reports they’re usually looking at the last three years.

Violent crimes like murder went from one in 2016 to two in 2017, and last year Duluth saw three murders.

As far as rape, there were 51 reported rapes in 2016, 35 in 2017, and 45 last year.

Chief Mike Tusken says even though these crimes are horrible the numbers don’t indicate that our city has a serious problem.

Tusken said the police department is doing many things to combat these violent crimes.

For rape, they’re working with PAVSA and other community partners to make sure victims are reporting sexual assault, and also changing how the department responds to sexual assaults.

He said it’s all about creating a safe space where people feel safe with police.

For preventing violent crimes like murder, Tusken said the Lake Superior Drugs and Violent Crimes Taskforce issued 199 search warrants last year where they removed 100 firearms from the street.

But Tusken said they couldn’t make the city safer without the help of citizens who report these crimes.

“We react according to the information that we’re given, and they make us certainly a lot more effective in doing our work,” said Tusken.

Chief Tusken also mentioned violent crimes like robberies and burglaries have decreased.

The department also highlighted that neighborhoods across Duluth, the Northland, and the nation will take part in National Night Out on August 6th.

It’s an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention.

Authorities said it also sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
