TWO HARBORS, MN– It has been 44 years since 29 lives were lost on the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, and those lives were honored at Split Rock lighthouse.

The annual Fitzgerald ceremony commemorates the sinking of the Fitzgerald on Novermber 10, 1975.

The lighthouse and visitor center were open, and included costumed interpreters who provided information on the famous shipwreck.

The lighthouse then temporarily closed to honor those who were lost on the lake.

After the ceremony, the lighthouse beacon was lit back up and the tower was re-opened.

This is the only opportunity each year visitors can climb the tower after dark to see the lit beacon.
