Austin Haskins is the CBS 3 Duluth morning meteorologist. He began with CBS 3 as a fill-in in August 2017, then moved over to weekends in October 2017 before taking over mornings in July 2018.
Haskins was born and raised in Solon Springs, about 40 minutes south of the Twin Ports. He attended Solon Springs High School before graduating in May 2017 from Northland College in Ashland with a degree in Meteorology.
He was apart of the Northland College Weather Club, which involved meeting once a week/bi-weekly to talk about weather and also events that the club takes part in, such as being apart of Faith in Action, where he helped out people with raking, shoveling or anything one may need if one is unable too.
Austin had the opportunity to go storm chasing as part of a may term class back in 2015 down in Kansas and Oklahoma. The group saw one tornado, in which was covered by a wall of rain.
He and a fellow classmate took part in forecasting for the Ashland area on their Weather Club forecasting page, and also took part in the Weather Challenge, which pits all schools across the U.S. in forecasting for different cities across the country, for all four years of college. He won first place in forecasting for Phoenix, AZ his sophomore year, going up against all freshman and sophomores, and received an award for being the best forecaster among that group.
Austin has lived in the area his whole life so he has a good idea of how quickly the weather the Northland can change.
This is his first job in broadcast television, but he has been passionate about the weather ever since he was a little kid, just ask any of his friends and family. He is looking forward to forecasting the weather for the Northland, with all the challenges that it presents.
When he’s not forecasting the weather, you can find him hanging out with his friends, playing sports, or working at the local gas station in Solon Springs. He enjoys watching professional basketball and baseball, along with several TV shows.
